What might have been a serious conflagration occurred this morning about half-past one o'clonk, and the prompt action of the Shortland Fire Brigade in preventing it is worthy of every praise. About the hour mentioned flames were seen issuing from a room, used as a kitchen, at the rear of the Bendigo Hotel in Pollen street, and within a few minutes the Brigade turned out and played a hoss, supplied by the Pollen street plugs, on the fire, which they Boon succeeded in extinguishing. It seems almost a miracle that tbo building was saved, >;S everything in the room in which the fire originated -was destroyed, and considerable damage was done to a room above it and to the passage leading to the front room of the house Every room in the house was saturated with water. The occupier, Mr J. M. Syms, estimates his damage at about £70, and his furniture and eftVcts are insured in the Victoria Office for £200. Mr Ehrenfriei owns the building, which, we believe, was uninsured.

Ho wns strongly inclined to make those people pay the expenses incurred since the opening of the case were it not for the trouble and expense which would have to be incurred in carrying such into effect.—The Waotu rehearing case came up before Messrs McDonald, Puckey, and G-eorge Leaf, Assessors, yesterday morning. Mr Leaf, it will be remembered, sat with Mr Williams when the case was last heard, and disagreed with the judgment of that Judge. Messrs Buller and Sheehan are the counsel engaged.
