COUNTY COUNCIL.

The usual meeting was held yesterday. Present—Crsßrodie (Chairman), Bagnall, Ball, Porter, Coufls, Thorburn, Fraser, Deeble, and Murdoch.

The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed.

Messrs Small and Gordon wrote, with a statement showing their loss of £410 3a Id upon the Moanatairi tramway leased by them.—The consideration of it was deferred until later on.

Sergeant-Major Kiely asked the Council to bear a share of the expenses incurred in connection with the late search party for the men who were lost in tbe bush when crossing from Mercury Bay.—The Council declined, stating that they had no funds for Buch a purpose. In*response to a claim for £10 damages, preferred by Thomas Cummings on account of his property near Owharoa being injured through horses and pedestrians passing over it.—lt was decided that the claim should be sent to the persons who caused the damage.

The Council, in reply to the manager of the Smile of Fortune, agreed to allow a portion of the Te Papa wire rope and any pipes they had available towards repairing the damage done to the Company's water main,

A letter was received from the manager of the New Eureka G.M. Co., Otunui. drawing the attention of the Council to the unfinished portion of the 12-foot track to the battery from the second falls.—Representations to the Govern« ment re the same had been made.

G. Cooper offered to reconstruct a bridge destroyed by the recent flood at Ohinemnri, if the Council would contribute £3 towards it.—lt was decided that 'the sum be paid on the completion of the work.

A slaughter house license was granted toMrE. M. Corbett.

A letter from Mr J. C. Woolner was received to the effect that a road cut by tbe County was causing damage to his property.—lt was referred to the Engineer to report upon. Mr A. J. Thorp stated that owing to (he incapacity of the outfall drains on the Te Aroha road several acres of his grass would be under water during the winter.

Cr Porter gave notice that he would move (hat the delta between the Ohine* muri and Waihi rivers be constituted a drainage district under the Public Works Act.

The application of the Secretary of the Waiotahi School Committee to have the paths leading to the school repaired, was referred to the Engineer. The letter from Mr J. B. Steedman concerning the dangerous condition of the Waikawau Tapu roadl was also referred to the Engineer, and the Clerk was instructed to communicate with the Coromandel County Council re their portion of the road.

The Council was informed by the Government that it had been gazetted to hare authority in the Parawai Licensing District. It was decided to grant Mr J. R. Perry 1£ sluice beads of water as applied for, subject to the regulation. The Council declined to acknowledge their responsibility in connection with the claim of £8 made by John Maher for damage .alleged to. be sustained by him owingtothe state of the Thames- Tapu road. The manager of the Bank of New Zealand wrote informing the Council that the overdraft of the County, which amounts to £6782, must not be exceeded, but. was to be reduced to £4000 before the 30th of September next. The lessees of the Moanatairi tramway complained that a portion of the mullock tip of the Reuben Parr Company had covered up part of the line and done some damage-to it. The application of the Dart G.M.Co. for a refund of gold duty as a contribution to the expense of drainage was granted. . The manager of the Queen of Beauty Company stated that, as suggested by the County Chairman and Engineer, he had reduced the consumption of water at the mine, which had increased the quantity of coal used by nine tons a week. He asked the Council to reduce the January ac-count.—-It was agreed that the Council should pay £12. In connection with the proposed hospital for Paeroa, the Government wrote stating that they could not assist in establishing it otherwise than in the usual way. The gold returns for the month shewed the lodgments to be—Bank of New Zealand, 3840zs ; .Union Bank,. 3Oozs. Letters were received from Young, Pope & Co., and from the residents in the Totara Riding, urging the repair of the Thames-Paeroa road.—The ratepayers were coolly informed, in reply, that they would have an opportunity shortly of expressing their opinions at the poll. It was decided to lay a water main to Block 27, at a coat not exceeding £20, upon the applicants for it depositing one year's rates. The Tramway Committee recommended that tbe Tararu and Moanatairi lines be re-let for three years at the nominal rental of £5, the present lessees to pay all sums to date. It was decided to remit the debt of the lessees to the Council. It was resolved that Mr Murdoch's claim be satisfied, and that Mr Rattray be paid £60 on account. The reports published by us yesterday of the special rating committee and the Engineer were read and adopted. [ftfr Engineer's report on the damages done by the recent floods was laid on the table, and the Chairman's action in telegraphing to the Government was approved o f a —The Chairman and Crs'Fraser, Bagnail* and Deeble were appointed a special committee to attend to all business connected with the gpldfield's roads, the Roads and Bridges Construction Act, and the damage done by the flood which should crop up during the month.
