The proposed final Anglo-Australian cricket match has now been definitely abandoned.
In the trial of Burns, for the Wick* cliffe murder, the jury have been unable to agree and have been discharged. Miss Emily Melville, the well known actress, has recovered nine hundred pounds from Messrs Williamson and Grains for a breach of contract.
The Postmaster-General proposes that the colonies should hold a conference on the question of forming a General Postal Union.
An accident occurred at the Flinders street railway station at one o'clock this morniDg. A goods train ran into and smashed an untenanted passenger train. Three men engaged in clearing the latter were slightly injured.
Mslboubne, Yesterday. Parliament was formally opened to-day by His Excellency the Governor, who, in his speech on the occasion, said that it was imperative the House should proceed at once to a discussion of the Estimates to provide means for carrying on the public works which have already been sanctioned. The speech then congrata* lated the members upon the favorable condition of the colonial finances, which showed a steady increase of the revenue. It was announced that the present session would commence after Easter, when bills would be introduced to amend the land laws, for railway construction, aud for ac amendment of the Water Conservation Acts, and that every effort would be made to press forward these measures.
In the Legislative Assembly this evening the debate on the Addressin-Keply to the Speech from the Throne was commenced. Mr-James Service'moved, as an amendment, his proposed vote of want of confidence motion which was seconded by Mr Graham Berry. The Hon. Thos. Bent, Commissioner of Raitw£fß>••■thereupon moved the adjournment of the House until Tuesday next, 6th inst., and after some further remarks the motion wes agreed to, and the House then adjourned. The Austral was successfully floated today, and has been beached for the removal of the cofferdam in order to lighten the vessel.
