The Evening Star MONTHLY SUMMARY FOR EUROPE AND AMERICA, Per s.s. 'City of Sydney.'
The month has closed up with exceptionally bad weather; heavy floods hard occurred, and tho damage is" not estimated. The Government has extended its favors to the district, and has granted it a sum of over- £11,0.00 to be expended in road-making in the country. This will enable us to be placed in communication with the various sfirrounding goldfields, and cause a large traffic to pass between us and the adjacent counties. Since the last mail left several.claims have come to the fore in yield, a considerable quantity of new ground has been opened, and what were hitherto looked upon as new companies have come to the fore. A large undertaking—viz., the erection of machinery and winding gear, for the purpose of working the ground of four companies—is approaching completion, and is expected to be in full work within three, weeks. The social atmosphere is clear, and politics are unknown. The town is especially healthy, and statistics, civil and criminal, are at a loss for padding. Unlike our Southern friends, we can only muster a bankrupt every month or two, and poverty in our midst is. rarely heard of. The Government has granted the County Council a sum of only £30,000, £11,000 of which is to be immediately spent on the roads of the County. This will facilitate communication with some of onr valuable County land, and generally help to open up the district. The number of shares allotted in the Thames Valley Eailway Company is about 10,000.
