Sir Julius Vogel has written the follow* ing letter to an Auckland'gentleman:— " I observe in the papers rumours of the discovery of diamonds in Auckland*. By accident I have with me an uncut diamond, found at Kimberley, South Africa,. and as it may possess peculiar interest at a time when rumours of diamond discoveries are floating about, I send it to you to ask you to present it to the Museum in Auckland, or to make such public use of it as may best be of service. I have long felt that there is a strong probability that diamonds will be discovered in New Zealand. Two most eminent authorities, Dr Percy and Professor Warrington Smythe, have told me to expect their existence from scientific daia; and I have met South African explorers who knew New Zealand aid predicted the same. Even if the preseat rumours are unfounded, I should still think that a search for diamonds may sooner or later be success* ful. I hope you will excuse my asking you to be the medium of this donation. You may make such use of this, note m seems best to you." L_
