An inquest was beld on Monday at the Owharoa Hotel on the body of Henry Albrecht, who was drowned wbile bathing in the Ohinemuri Hirer on Saturday last-. The jury returned a verdict of death from accidental drowning.
A nabbow escape from fire occurred at Te Aroha on Saturday night. About half past ten o'olock a constable discovered the shop window of Mr J. JFarreil to be on fire, and
extinguised it before the fire sprearl. I'- is supposed the window-! mp set alight to the curtains. The stock and building were insuted for £650.
Mb MiitEß obtained an order from the Resident Magistrate tin's morning impound-ing-'a'" sum''paid into Court in the case of McDonald v. Muir, to go towardß the satisfaclion of a judgment given in the case of Rouse v. McDonald. .
The number of logs brought down to the booirs by Monday night's fresh were about 400. The fresh was not from the Keuaerunga river proper, but came down 'he Hihi Creek, bringing with it about 1000 logs, the greater number of which grounded as soon as they got into the broader channel of the main stream. The logs at the booms are chiefly small, but should suffice to - keep the mill employed about six weeks* Work is to be started on Monday next.
Tee Circus was fairly attended last evening, when a capital programme was gone through. In thanking the public for their support during their stay here, the proprietor announced their departure for America by the March mail for a two years tour.
At the Primitive Methodist Church tomorrow evening the Rev. C. E. Barley is announced to deliver a lecture, the Bubjfot matter thereof being " Dr. Ghithrie." We doubt not but a most interesting and instructive discourse will be delivered, Dr. Gkthrie and his writings being i?o well knowj and appreciated in all parts of the civilised globe.

We would Bgain remind our musical friends of the meeting at the Academy of Music tonight to inaugurate a Choral Society for the Thames. The nratter has been taken up most warmly by a number of gentlemen, and the promises of support received by them from both performing and non-pevforming intending members is very encouraging. We understand that Mr E. A: E. Owen has signified his willingae3s to accept the post of conductor, and Mr Beale that of clief d'orchesire, and if such is the case the Society is to be congratulated on being so fortunate aH to secure the services of two such musicians. It the Police Court this uiorniag a native named Karouna Pona was charged with furious riding at Paiawai. The defendant did not appear. Evidence was given by two boys rs to the commission of the offence, and a find of two pounds was inflicted. The Magistrate stated that this was getting a too common offeace wilh Europeans as well as Natives, and some check would have to be put upon it. Thb Manawatu Daily Times Bays, that in crossing the Manawatu Ferry Tawhiao fell off the punt into the river. The Bh' .'k sobered his Majesty vevy considerably, and on emerri ing from the water he developed an astonishing familiarity with some strong English ex-, pletives. : .
The new French line of mail packets batwean Marseilles and Australia will be made use of by the Post-office in New Zealand, commencing with the departure of the Natal from Sydney and Melbourne on the 3rd and Bth prox. The postage to France has has been reduced to 6d per half-ounce for letters, Id per ounce for looks and printed papers, and Id for each newspaper not exceeding 4 ounces. The letter postage to Suez, Aden, Mare Des. Seychelles, Reunion, and Mauritius. Postage has also been reduced to 6d for half an ounce when forwarded by French packets.
