The wit of Sergeant Ballantine appears to be of a Very 1 caustic character. When some'years agoa distinguished journalist was forced to appear in- the witness box, the Sergeant, just before, cross-examining him. entirely deprived him of bis self possession, by coolly obgerTing, "There is flour off your nose, sir." ■ On another occasion he publicly rebuked Mr, Justice Hawkins—then Mr Hawkins, "Q.C.,--for his inveterate lore of" accumulating wealth, : asiuring Biiii"thatTie had much mor« tnbnej cthan he would ever need in this life, that -he could not^ possibly hope to take the surplus away with him,, and if he did it %ottld W<»f certaioly melt, • ' . ;
