GREYMOUTH.

Yesterday. Encouraging news has been received from Laugdown's auarta claim at Tapii*

roa range, where it is reported a fine reef has b°en struck rup.ninl; in a magnetic direction. It will require another week or fortnight to form an opinion as to its value.

This afternoon the bod.; of an infant four months old, named Florence May McLeod, was found. The evidence of the mother, Mary Jane McLeod, an un~ married girl, aged 16, we.,t to show that her father came home tipsy on Saturday and began abusing her. saying the b bastard was : loafing on him.* 'He" then took off his soft felt hat and hit the baby with it, the mother alleging that the same hand that held the hat also hit the baby in the breast. The child was quite well for an hour after. It then vomued, and this was followed by convulsions. A. doctor was called in, but the child died ou Sunday night. The evidence of Drs Morice and Achison showed that a postmortem examination did not disclose any marks, or of contusions or abrasion externally or internally; that all the organs, exceptthe brain, were sound, and io the brain 'two membranes were a good deal congested ; that the child died from convulsions caused by congestion of the brain, which might be brought about by many causes. After hearing the evidence, the Coroner straightway cleared the Court of the public, the witnesses, the press, and the police ; also while he addressed the jury.- A unani* mous verdict of death from convulsions through natural causes was returned.
