The Kaiapoi Council to-day had a long conference with the cabmen, who will probably take out the required licenses, the Council reconsidering the clause in the by-law objected to. The Permanent Investment and Loan Association held its twelfth annual meeting to-ni'ghit. The credit balance for the year 1882 was shown as £2701. A summons returnable on March 30th has been taken out in the Supreme Court calling t.pon Duncan McCallum, of the Tambour« Major Company, to show cause why his bankruptcy should not be annulled. .

The Her. Mr Brittain, upon whose conduct with girls in his congregation an enquiry was some time ago demanded, has resigned his charge.

The subsoil water level has lowered from 3 to 5 feet below the surface since the drainage works commenced.
