COUNTY COUNCIL.
_^_ _ The usual meeting was held yesterday in the County/ ; Chambers. Present—Crs Brodie (in j'ihe Cbair), Bagnall, Porter, Bull, Deeble, Coutts, Thorburn, Fraser, and Murdoch. . The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. Amongst the correspondence read were communications from Hoterini Taipari, claiming travelling expenses; from Dr Payne reporting that he had fumigated Mrs Holland's house, and bad destroyed £12' worth of her goods. He enclosed his account, in the matter for £7 14s 6d. Mrs Holland's account was passed. Several of the Councillors objected to Dr Payne's destruction of such articles as kerosene, &o. Or Bagnall moved that the Doctor's account be paid, and gave notice of motion that the medical officer's appointment ;be. cancelled, and fresh arrangements be made for fulfilling the duties.—All Nang was granted permission to lay a one-inch service-pipe to his garden at Parawai, from the house of Mr Cheals, adjoining.—A report from Mr Birch, made by Mr J. Marshall, on a track from Tairua to Thames was received and referred to the Engineer to report upon.—The Engineer was directed to furnish the estimate of the cost of a footpath from the business portion of Paeroa to the Boman Catholic Church.—Accounts from James Kattray and J. and W. Murdoch for £75 and £100 respectively for fencing Kauaeranga Valley road through Hecreation Ground were referred to the Finance Committee. —A complaint from Mr O. Sorenson, that his property at Paeroa was flooded owing to the water gathering on the road having no outlet, was referred to the Surveyor.—The Harbor Board informed (he Council that on the 12th inst. the latter body should elect • two of its members to represent it at the Board. — The Council declined sto give Nikorima Poutotara some posts and rails to fence portions of the County j road as requested by him—Mr T. Logan i complained of the road to the goldfield constructed by. the County not being properly secured, in . consequence of which he had had a judgment for trespass recorded against him.—The rates of Mrs Martin were remitted on account of her inability to pay them.—The Chairman stated that in response to an application the New Manukau Mining Co. for a supply of water for ventilation purposes, he had instructed the Engineer to supply the water subject to the regulations.— Vouchers were received for £295 16s, receipts for gold duty during October, November, and December; £12 19s, goldsfields revenue.—lt was decided to give, subject to the regulations, Mr Gr. W. Bull sufficient water to drive 12 head of stampers, at the same rate as the mills on the flat paid; Mr Bull, in bis application, said he would lay down a ten-inch main from the race, and as he would be obliged to import the pipes, the water would not be required for several months.—"Correspondence was opened from the Queen of Beauty Co. as to the water wasted in driving their tur* bine. The Council resolved not to depart from their previous resolution in the matter. —Messrs Ralph (2) and Gordon formed a deputation to the Council for the purpose of complaining of the neglect to the Waite kauri road. After pointing out the dis advantage the people in the district were at owing to the road not being formed and stating that £68,000 worth of gold had been produced there, and not £100 had been expended on the road, the Chairman informed the deputation that the Council would carry out the work as soon as money was available. The deputation retired.
The following financial statement was read :—Keceipts : To gold duty, £295 16s ; goldfields revenue, £90 2s 6d; water race receipts, £228; County rates, £104 9s ; publicans' license and other fees, £30 Os 6d ; to balance, £6204 13s 6d — Total, £6953 Is 6d.—Expendituree : By bauk balance, Ist January, £6804 8s 8d; January accounts for December, £148 12s 10d.—Total, £6953 Is 6d.-,Balance brought down, £6204 13s sd; February accounts per Board of Works, per Finance Committee, £313 16s; printing and advertising, £21 13s 3d; stationery, £9 Is 9d ; Licensing Act expenses, £5 17s ; Public Health Act, £11 17s; legal expenses, £8 2s; sundries, Borough rates, £3 19s 2d ; travelling expenses, £7 6s : saiaries, £67 3s 4d; water race, £37.— Total, £6(390 9s.— E. The Surveyor's report, as published in yesterday's issue, was.presented. It was' resolved that £15 be expended on the Puru-Mereury Bay road. • That the un~ metalled portions of the road in the Totara riding be at once metalled. That portion of the road in the neighborhood of Hikntaia be repaired, and the bridge and culvert approaches be improved. That the Rotoku bridge be repaired. In connection with the Ohiaemuri cemetery the Council decided to pay £15 on account of fencing, and the balance of the contract money upon the certificate of Cr Bagnall, who would examine the work.—lt was -resolved that the Tararu and Moanatairi tramways be let by lease for a term of three years.—The Chairman and Crs Bull and Fraser were appointed to interview the bank manager regarding financial arrangements. The Council directed the Treasurer to sue for all outstanding water race and tramway accounts. The Council then rose.
