Yesterday. -, A telegram received by the Northern, -Steamship Company this afternoon, states that Captain Baker, 'so well known owing to his long connection with the steamer Staffa, met his death by drowning at Opotiki this morning. It would appear : that the Staffa had been bar-bound in Opotiki for some time, and in accordance, with instructions from Auckland, Captain Baker proceeded to sound the bar, and hii boat was upset, and be was'drowned; No farther particulars are yet to hand., , .
