A meeting of the Board of "Governors was held this rooming, n the Borough Council Chambers. Present—Messrs Fraser (in the chair), Marshall, Bagnall, Speight, Brodie, and Osborne.
The minutes of the previous meeting were read and ednfirmed.
The Secretary read a telegram notifying the appointment of the Board of Governors, and also a letter from the Town Clerk stating that Messrs Wilson, Osborne, and Speight had been elected represeuta tives of the Borough Council.
Mr Marshall proposed, and Mr Osborne seconded, that Col. Fraser be Chairman for the ensuing year.—Carried. '
A telegram was received from Government stating that they would only pay day fees for Miss Nahe's education this year.—lt was resolved to acquaint Hone Nabe of this fact.
In answer to a question, the Secretary said he had received no. reply from "the Piako Council relative to their acceptance of the £50 vote offered by the Board towards the cost of constructing a road through the sections on the Endowment at Te Aroha. He bad further heard, through Mr Kenrick, that the work was being proceeded with by the Piako Council; who had tacitly agreed to accept the grant offered.—lt was resolved to acquaint the Council that the money was at thsir disposal.
A treasury Toucher for £69 ss, goldfield's revenue, was received from the Government.
A. letter was read from Mr J. A. Miller, applying for a transfer by way of mortgage of Mr Joy's interest in No. 7 section of the endowment to Mr Louis Ebrenfried.^—An application was made by the Battery Company, Te Aroha, to lease part of lot 13 from the lessee, S. C. Macky.— A letter was also read from that gentleman asking for permission to sublet portions of his section, and agreeing, if the Board acceded to his request, to hare tha compensation clause struck out of his lease. , : ;
Mr Speight considered all the applications read were infractions of the lease, and could not be granted. The only way to deal with the Battery Company's application was to reenter on the portion of the land required, compensate the lessee, and then lease to the Company,
The Chairman thought it was better to issue a circular to all the tenants, notifying them that they would not be allowed to build other than farm buildings on their land.
Mr Speight thought the best way to deal with the question was to stick close to the terms of the lease, and make the tenants farm their sections.
Considerable conversation ensued upon Mr Miller's application, as it appeared to be understood that the; mortgage applied for was for the purpose of building an hotel, aud the lease provided that only one dwelling house could be erected on the land, for which compensation could be claimed. Mr Brodie moved that Mr Joy's application be refused, aud that notice be sent to all the tenants that the Board would not countenance the erection of any buildings save those mentioned in the lease.-.
Mr Bagnall thought, it. was a wrong principle not .to allow «i man to raise money on mortgage.' If they wanted to stop the erection of publio-houees, &0., let them wait till an application was made to do so.
Mr Osborne seconded Mr Brodie'i motion, which was carried.
Be the application of the Battery Com* p&ny, it was resolved to write to the
Company asking them to forward a plan showing what land they wanted and for what purpose. It was also decided to appoint Messrs Speight, Bagnall and the Chairman a committee to report to next meeting on the whole question of the Reserve and the powers of the Board respecting same. Mr Macky's letter was also referred to the Committee, the writer being informed that his letter was under consideration. The Head Master wrote recommending that the school should be advertised more systematically.— Keferred to the Visiting Committee. The Head Master's and Examiner's reports were received, and on the motion of Mr Brodie it was resolved that they ~ be printed in pamphlet form and sent to the parents of the scholars. A letter was received from the Board of Education asking that a free tuition be given to W. Eernick, who had gained , a certificate of proficiency. at the scholar" ship examination.—Granted. A visiting committee, consisting of. the Chairman and Messrs Speight and Bagnail was appointed, and they were authorised to draw up the Board's report > for the past year. The monthly accounts, amounting to £83 4s 2d, were passed for payment and the meeting adjourned.
