Membebb of public bodies in the Borough are very inconsiderate in the matter of wasting other people's time. It took-twenty minutes to find the proverbial fifth to-day to make a quorum at the Harbor Board meeting. Thus one man kept several others waiting.
Thh annual election of members of the Harbour Board takes place on this day week.
The supply of water in the County race during the p°et few days has not been sufficient to supply all the batteries, the Queen of Beauty and Herald being idle. The latter will, however, start again to-morrow morning, the supply having increased, probably owing to the rain which fell back in the ranges yesterday. Sib Fbancib Beii predicts that in the year 1900 New Zealand will he the most populous of the Australasian colonies.
These was a just complaint made at the Harbour Board meeting that the Government paid no rent in respect of the magnificent premises occupied by them on the foreshore. We should recommend.the Board to see that the promise made by Sir George Grey when he was in office is carried out.
By the Preßß Association we learn that " private telegrams have been received in Dunedin on Saturday stating there is a likelihood that BiehopMoran, on b;ing asked, would consent to contest Inangahua." Though his chances of success would be somewhat remote, he would receive a much larger-support on the Weßt Coaefe than he did in Dunedin.
The Australia, with the San Francisco mails on board, armed in Auckland before noon to-day.
The annual meeting of the Thames Harbor Board was held in the Borough Chambers at 12 o'clock to-day. Present—Messrs Bagnall in the chair), Marshall, McGtojWan, Bull, and J". Read. The minutes of the previous annual meeting were read and confirmed. The statement of receipts and expenditure shewing the former to be £1936 Os 4d was read, and the latter £203018s Id. These figures do not. include the balances in the bank on the Ist January, and 31et December, 1882 ; which were £958 8s Id, and £863 10s 4d respectively. The assets and liabilities were stated at £59,361 10a "4d, and £7,204- ]6s 6d. These statements were read, received, and adopted > and an abstract ordered to be printed.
The prospect in Zululand is not very satisfactory. The Zulu chiefs are Btated to be behaving insolently to Sir T. Shepatone.
Thebe was no business done in the R M Court to-day.
As we go to preßS there is every appearance of an immediate and heavy downpour of rain occurring.
THE cases whioh come on for hearing in the District Court to-morrow are :—-Buchanan v. O. Griffiths, £69 lls Bd, for the recovery of the amount of a dishonored promissory note. P. K. Donnelly v. H. E. Campbell, £99 4s, for work and labor done. R. A Wi^ht v. P. Austin, £> 00 for trespass and damage. In the IbbS; mentioned case a jury v ill sit. An application to wind up the Tairua Gem G.M.Co. (Limited) will be made by James Benshaw.
