CHRISTCHURCH.

Yesterday.

John Epps, a workman at the main bridge, fell off, and was drowned on Friday evening. A party of men^ran some distance along the bank, but -could not save him. The body was found yesterday two miles down. Epps wasa'good swimmer, and had received a medal from the Humane Society for saving life, but in falling he struck his head against some wood-work, and was probibly stunned. Mr J. Lee is now in the field for Selwyn. Mr A. Saunders and Mr E.Lockhead are also mentioned as possible candidates.

The following Volunteers were svrorn in at Canterbury under the new regulations: —The Lytteltou Navals, 63; Artillery— Christohurch and Timaru, 106 ; Infantry, 313; total, 481.
