The Cup Handicap was made up by the stewards, and the result was that only six horses accepted. The Premier has returned to Wellington. _ • -•-. - .. A controversy is going on respecting the healing powers of Mr Stephen, and the- local evening paper has invited communications from those who'have'been treated. Out of five letters sent in four persons state that they did not receive any relief; and the fifth, winds up thus :•— '• Be he what he mpy, the relief from suffering for a fortnight, which has never been secured before, is something to be
thankful for, and she has never been so " well for many, many' years." Land sales, ordinary, £79.408 9s lid; on deferred payment, £6994 16s lOd ; grand total, £871.827 9s 4d. For the corresponding quarter of 1881 the revonue was as follt ws:—Ordinary, customs, £366.335 7s sd; stamps, £97.730 6s 9dLand Tax, £150 17s Id; Property Tax, £158 7s 2d; beer dmy, £17.024 19s lOd; railways, £205.812 6s lid ; telegraphic, £19345 9* 11; registration and other fees, £7-408 9s lOd ; marine, £3233 10a od ; miscellaneous. £16,980 4* 8d ; territ >rial depasturing licenses &0., £36927 9s Id; miscellaneous, £763 13s lid; tdial. £771 780 3*. On deferred payment-, £3030 JL6s 4d; grand total, £861.778 6s 7d.. The stamp duty includes postal aud judicial revenue and land trans fer fees. The above figures represent the revenue account forwarded to the Treasury within"the quarter, not the rerenue collected during, the quarter.
