Thames Borough Council.
The ordinary meeting of the Conceit was held at the Borough Chambers last evening. Present—His Worship the Mayor (in the chair), and Crs Speight, Veale, Bawden, arid McGowan.
The mirutes of the previous mrefc< Tg were read and confirmed.
J. McDermott, contractor, for. the Waiotahi aqueduct, requested theCouDcil to: take over the work,- it having been completed according toplans and specifications, and asking that the sum due on the contract, viz., £332 IQs, be paid. After the Public.Works Committee's report had been read, it was decided, that nothing be done in the* matter until Mr 1 Beere is communicated with? .' ~ .,:■:

The returns of gold lodged with the various Banks last month showed Bank of New Zealand; ;32350.zs ...Idwt;" Union,
The-plafis of several sections of land proposed to be taken for Hape Creek straightening'purposes were received.
Tbe remuneration of the lleturi-ting Officer was fixed at three guineas for a contested election, and one guinea when no contest takes place, It was resolved to invite applications for the position, which was rendered vacant by the death of Captain Davies. A slaughtering license was granted on the application of Messrs Banks and Co., subject to the payment of a fee of £20. Mrs O-Brien/S application for permission to lay watar'on to her premises in Pollen street was granted. Accounts to the amount of £165' were passed for payment. The manager of the Bank of New Zealand ;wrote calling attention to the over' -draft of- the Council, which the Mayor stated was £5500.
The valuation list of tbe Borough was produced, and showed a total rateable value of £26,270.
The Works Committee forwarded tbe following report:—" The Committee have to report that with a view odo away with the stench and nuisance caused by the stagnant water and drainage in the intake at the back of the Pacific Hotel, orders have been given to the Foreman of Works to cut away the dam at the end'of the in* take near Cocbrane street. will allow the tide to flow through it, and it is anticipated will abate r the nuisance. Ifc is recommended that for the present tenders for carting be called, returnable in 14 days, in preference to the purchase of draft horses by the Council. With respect to the completion of works connected with the Waiotahi aqueduct and the payment of the contrac'or's and Mr Beere's accounts, the Committee have put themselves in communication with Mr Beere, and hope to be able to report satisfactorily on this matter at the next sitting of the Council.—W. Fbaseb, Mayor."— The l'eport was adopted. . The Town Clerk was instructed to invite tenders for carting and the usual supply. • . The deaths of five infants and tw6: adults had.been reported by the Inspect I tor of Nuisances^ and Dr C'allan had reported a ca,se of diphtheria; .which was. progressing favorably. This'report; and that of the Relieving Officer, were read and received.
A notice of motion was received from Mr McCullough to the effect that the Council take the necessary steps towards raising a loan of £10,000; or £20,000f0r the^purpose of works enumerated in a report presented by the Foreman ;6f Works at tho November meeting. '
The Mayor and Crs MeGowan and Speight were appointed a committee to have examined,, and if approved of, .sign a deed of mortageto Mr Ehrenfried in connection with the St. George Hall purchase. On the motion of Cr Bawden, seconded by Cr McGow.an, it was resolved thai the Foreman of Works bo directed to effect tbo necessary repairs on the road up the Caledonian Spur.
Instructions were given to the Collector to take steps towards effecting the immediate payment of outstanding rates.
This concluded the business of the ordinary meeting. .
. A special meeting was then held for the purpose of selecting three Councillors to represent the Council on the High School Board of Governors, the Mayo? being one of the Eoard by virtue of his office as Mayor. Crs Osborne, Speight,^ and Wilson were appointed. A second special meeting was afterwards held for the purpose of taking over the Tararu Road. It was formally- done, and declared a public road. The Council then adjourned.
