OUR MINES.

NEW PEINOE IMPERIAL,

. The.,, winze, westward of the shaft is stopped for the present, the men being engaged enlarging it at the top on the eastern side. A dpor will then be placed across the drive, and the draught forced down to the bottom of the winze. By this . means sinking can be carried on without any inconvenience being caused by tfie gas oozing out of the reef. The crosscut for the Mariner's reef is in a fine class of sandstone. There is no sign of quartz in the face as yet. The drive north east on the new reef has been stopped, and the men have started to open out upon it from the other eide of the cro^cut. The manager has started to drive on the break from the drive on No. 2' reef .towards the new reef. This will,, when -completed, thoroughly ventilate both drives and the crosscut. The store bagged yesterday west of the shaft was obtained from the third and fourth stopes, and a little gold was left showing. Eastward the stope being worked at present takes ia both the foctwall leader and the main body of quartz. A little gold is: showing in the foimer body of quartz, which looks very kindly for gold, carrying a good per centage ofiavorable minerals. The haul of stone reported yesterday was obtained at a point about 10 or 12 feet west, of the -winze. ■:'..-■ ' ■■■ •

OLD GOLDEN CALF, v The only work at present in progress is the driving of a crosscut from No. 2 to 'No. 1 reef at aa intermediate lievel between Nos. 1 and 2 levels of the" Caledonian shaft. The distance between the two reefs is estimated at 100 ft, and the face has up to the present been advanced 40 feet. The country is rather tigut, which makes progress slow. The manager also expected to cut some leaders worked with success to the eastward of the crosscut', but as yet only one small vein of quarts has heeu intersected.
