THE SALVATIONISTS IN INDIA.
The excitement and bad feeling induced by the peculiarly aggressive form of = preaching practised by the Salvationists culminated in a riot on Sunday week. The Salvationists had erected their tent near the market. During the afternoon it was filled by a-large crowd of spectators. At the same time several Moulvies began preaching near the tent, and succeeded in collecting a large Mahommedan crowd. An attack was made on the Salvationists' tent, and a portion of the furniture destroyed ;. the Europeans were assailed with abuse and pelted with stones, and some little time elapsed before the police were enabled to restore order.
Three only of the rioters were arrested by
the police, and were subsequently tried, "" convicted, and sentenced by the magis« trate to short terms of rigorous imprisonment with a fine.
