Thames Harbor Board.

Owing to the regular meeting, which' should have been held on the 2nd inst., having lapsed, a special meeting of the v Thames Harbor Board was held in the Borough Council Chambers yesterday at four o'clock. Present—Messrs Eraser (Ohairnian), Osborne, Mc&owan, Carpenter, Marshall, and Bead, *'5 >

The minutes of the previous-ordinary meeting were read and confirmed. -*■» - '. r» ■ Applications for the posinoßPpTTlarbormaster, were opened from Messrs Cox; Jacob, and E. Onyon. It wa's resolved to advertise for applications for the post, and those received would be treated as in reply to the advertisement unless withdrawn bpfore the date ot selection.

It was proposed by Mr Osborne, and seconded by Mr Marshall, that the salary be fixed at £200 per annum. To this an amendment was moved by Mr Bead, and seconded by Mr Carpenter, that the salary be £175.

After some: discussion the amendment was carried by 3 votes to 2.

The Public Works Department sent a tracing shewing land proposed to be taken for railway purposes at Shbrtland Wharf. Some time ago the Board wrote to the Department agreeing to give up, without compensation, the area required, if the Government would extend the wharf one chain, and remove \he goods shed. The plans now. received shewed^ that it was the Government's intention to take all the wharf. The chairman stated that he had instructed Mr Jackson to prepare a plan whicß-showed a.lesser area to be taken, and had written to the Go-* vernmejit objecting on behalf of the Board. to the space shown being taken, and stating that it was prepared to hand over an area sufficient for railway purposes.- The consideration of the matter was deferred until the receiptofareply from the Department. An application wag received frothy Mr J. Butcher for permission to construct a fishing weir at Waipapa Point, 2| miles below the Kopu Wharf. He also asked foi assistance in ejecting, a" wharf outside thfi)t*apnfcU o£ the river, 'where he' stated tfter^is*].^ ftrefc of water at lpw tide. agreed to give for public use a road a chain wide which would intersect the Count; road, and the use of the wharf when erected. . '

The Secretary was instructed to ask Mr Butcher to wait upon the Chairman and Mr Read to discuss the question, which will be s considered at a future meeting. The acting-Harbormaster reported foe the month as follows:—" 1. The retaining wall would have been completed only for the very fine nature of the material used, owing to there being rery little output from the mine's of a larger kind, but during the last few days the progress* has been more rapid; there remains about one chain and a half to be done yet. 2. Mclntosh's contract for bracibg wharf and putting additions to store, is completed. Any portion of the wprk ; hot meeting with my approval I had'rectified. I found it necessary to put an additional window in at a cost of 10s. 3. The spars ordered by the late Harbormaster, from Mr Casey, are landed at Tararu. I have not taken delivery of them yet.* Mr Butcher informs me that Captain Davios had arranged with him to place them in position'; I am'not aware. udqi^ what terms. I await your 'instruction in' the matter."

The Secretary, said that the annual meeting of the Board should take place on Monday, the 15th inst., but a&, Mr Durrien, the authorised auditor, could not be here in time/for that date, authority was given to the Chairman and Secretary respectively to adjourn the meeting to the 29th inst.

The Secretary announced -that;!jfcj[© election of members of the-Board would take place on the, twelfth-of February, and that of Chairman on the; 26th of tlbe same month':

Instructions were given for the preparation of rolls of persons entitled to iTOte for members.

The Borough Council wrote informing the Board that Mr Fra.ser had been elected Mayor, and would: sit at the Board by virtue of that office. :

The Chairman tendered his resignation as a member of the Board representing the Thames County Council, Chairman of the Board. He then took his seat as/Mayor", and was on the motion of Mr McGowan, re-elected Chairman of the Board.

Mr R. E. Sckofield was appointed acting Harbormaster uatil the position is filled as decided daring an early part of the meeting. Ifc was resolved to Tote^, one month's salary to be paid to fche family oflthe late Harbormaster. *
