At a meeting held at Bowi's settles ment at Puniu, that chief was authorised to send a letter to the Native Minister asking that an amnesty be proclaimed.
Bloomfield and Wylie, of Gisborne, were the purchasers of the racehorse Piscatorious for 325 guineas.
Wahanui had an interview with Mr Grace, and said that the cause of delay in completing the settlement with Europeans, is differences among the natives them* selves. He added, " Give us a little time
to breathe, and settle-matters, and all things will be made ri&ht"
The New Zealand Insurance Company's half-yearly meeting was held today. The report shews that the net premiums, less re insurances, amount to £91,159, being an increase of £12,595 over the corresponding half of 1881. The past six months have been very disastrous to underwriting interests in all parts? of the world, and this company has not been fortunate enough to escape heavy losses both in the Fire and Marine Departments. After making a full estimate of all claims that have arisen prior to the 30th November, there remains to the credit of profit and loss a balance of £19,487. The report proposed to pay a dividend of 3s per share, absorbing £15,000* leaving £4487 to be carried forward to next year. The total income for the half year, including £21,584 of balance fromjast half, was £126,761. The fire and marine losses, and appropriation for unpaid losses, amount to £70,248. The report was adopted.
