It is a gratifying fact that the attendance at the public library and reading room is daily growing larger, and the benefits to be derived from the institution are fully appreciated by a great number of the inhabitants of the town. The number of volumes in the library exceeds 3000, and the reading room contains files of the leading Home and colonial newspapers and magazines, still it is a lamentable fact that the subscribers to the are only a little over one hundred^i^vnutnWr. During the last three years'.aboul two hundred and fifty pounds has been expended on books , alone, about fifty pounds per annum is paid for newspapers and periodicals, : and an order was recently sent away for a lot of new books to still further increase the library.T With all these attractions for those who have a taste for literature it does seem remarkable that with a population of* over five thousand people, we should not do more towards the support and extension of so valuable an institution as the one in question. Our desire in bringing this subject before the public is to awaken some interest in it, and prompt norsubscribers to add their names to the list of those who avail themselves of the use of the very creditable library Many who do not require such institutions for the purpose of recreation or reference should remember the number who are induced to spend hours in the library, which would, were it non-existent, be spent in less beneficial places, and should think of those whose means don't permit them to purchase books and newspapers, and to whom the library is a great benefit.
