A PLEASANT PLACE TO LIVE IN.

The following i3 a picture of a Catholic parish in Prussian Poland, as drawn by a Polish paper, the Suryer Toznanski :-- *™e P8"'8"' which bas a population of /000, has dreadfully fallen off. The younff people grow up without religion, and drunkenness and immorality are growing apace. Larceny and arson are the order of the day. Last year ten houses were set'fire to, and up to this day the wrongdoers have not been discovered. The other day a man tried to drown his wife in a well; he was prevented by other people coming to the spot, but nothing has been done to him." This shows what a place will come to in which religion is ranishing away, because for years past it has been left without a priest. Owing to the war that is still going on between the State and the Church in Prussia, the parish referred to, like a great many others, has for years been on the " bereaved " list—that is to say,it has had to go without pny minister of religion. Some little time ago a young priest, pass~ ing through the place, took compassion on the poor people, and began a system of ministrations which proved very efficient. Many godless people were brought back tratbe path of duty. But wo sooner did this become known than the public prosecutor ordered thepriest to be arrested and indicted for "the illegal performance of ministerial functions." The* priest has been liberated on bail, but he will, in due course, be arraigned at the bai of a criminal court. Comment is superfluous.—Universe.
