AUCKLAND.

This day.

The case of alleged mnrder preferred against Priestly and Mrs Hamilton commenced at the Police Court to day. Messrs Earl and Cooper appeared for the defence, and Mr Williamson, Crown Proso cutor, prosecuted. Strong comments were made by the prisoners' counsel re newspaper comments on the case. There are over forty witnesses to be examined. The only evidence of importance that has yet transpired, is of Doctor Goldsboro', who made the postmortem examination. Ho deposed that the wound on Hamilton's head corresponded exactly with the axe Mrs Hamilton was seen, carrying on the morning after Hamilton's death, and that the wound could not have been caused by a fall on the bedstead, as asserted by Mrs Hamilton.
