The beer duty last year for the colony was £58,591, being 3d per gallon on 4,680,077 gallons. Major Atkinson is indisposed, and bad to postpone his departure for Taranaki; he is^xpected to go by coach in a day or two. Mr Bryce returns to Wellington to-morrow night, and Mr Whitaker is expected to arrive here before the arrival of Sir William Jervois. Mr Rollestou will be absent from 'Wellington; for some time, as he will make » TiaiL't-: {'" Oisgc goldfields. • The writ for.the.Peninsula.seat, which was rendered vacant by the death of Mr Seaton, was issued on the 23rd ult., and is returnable by tha 27th of this month. Upwards of 100 applications have been made by local bodies under the roads and Bridges Construction Act. A large nuta« ber of these, however, are incomplete. This day. The Customs returns for the colony for last month were £113,395, and the beer duty £7073. For the corresponding month of 1881 they were:—Customs, £128,881; beer,duty, £6598. For the nine months (April to December inclusive) the Customs duties amounted to £1,119,282, and the beer duty to £45,495.
