Hawthorne Railway Accident
A CHAEGE OF MANSLAUGHTER.
Mei-boubne, Yesterday. The inquest into the circumstances under which Mr Thomas was killed at the recent railway Accident on the Haw- - thorne line was concluded ted ay. The verdict of the jury is to the effect that the ; fatality was caused by culpable negligence on the part of the stationmaster (Thorn- \_ son) of Hawthorne, and the guard (Hunt) '\ who was in charge of the special train by which deceased was a paßsenger, and both were arrested on a charge of manslaughter. Bail, however, was allowed in case of eech,.,, prisoner. The jury added jtwo riders to , the verdict: in the first, expressing the opinion that the evidence adduced at the inquest showed great lack of organisation and discipline to exist in the Bailway Department/and advising the appointment of a permanent head to the depart* - ment; and secondly, urging the impera«. tive necessity for apprjing continuous \ brakes to all trains without delay.
