The County authorities haTe taken time by the forelock and formulated a claim for £41,C30 under the Roads and Bridges Construction Act: According to this Act £100.000 of the Colonial Public Works Fund, and £100,000 from the Land Fund, are to be transferred to another account, " The Main Koads Account." In other words the the General Government set apart £200,000 to enable County Councils to make. main roads. The County desiring aid shall cause proper estimates of the work to be prepared, submit them to the Minister, and make application for a iirant out oP the Main Roads Fund, one fourth of which grant shall be . re-payaMe to Government. The Minister shall imimate his mind on the matter, and if the reply be favorable, a poll of ratepayers shall be taken, with a view to tes'ing the feeling of the community, and if carried the Coun cil shall proceed to levy a special rate which shall be sufficient to repay onefourth of the amount granted within ten year;*. After certain preliminaries the Government will then auth rise the works to be proceeded with. Thus the Govern ment would pay threesfourths of tbe cost of tbe roads, and lend the County the other fourth for ten years without interest. The Thames County intends to ask for the construction of main roads to the extent of £41,000, the schedule of which appears in another column.
