Borough Reports.

The fortnightly meeting of the Borough Council did not take place last night, there not being a quorum of Councillors present. The following extracts are from reports that would have been presented fo the Council: —

The Works Committee report having received two letters from Mr D. M. Beere, one to the effect that he has accepted nn appointment and will leave the Thames before the end of December, necessitating the appointment of some person to take charge of the work. The second letter from Mr Beere is notifying the Committee that the sun and wind will have so strong an effect upon the planking of the Waiotahi flumiag, causing it to shrink more or less, that the side seams cannot be main* tamed watertight, and that very probably the first flood that comes will wash the greater part of the oakum out of the seams, and recommends that the seams be battened and the planking painted outside with two coats of Hematite oil paint. The cost of these additions will be about £120. The Committee recommend that the extra work referred to by Mr Beere be not executed. The Believing Officer has reported to the Charitable Aid Committee that the tea forwarded by Mr Deeble as tea ration supplied by the contractors, Messrs Mears and Co., to poor people on the order of the Council was very greatly inferior to the sample sent with his tender, and was returned to Messrs Mears and Co., who issued other in lieu of it. The Believing Officer also reports that during November he obtained a tea ration from Messrs Mears and Co., and found it inferior to that seat as sample when tendering. A third tea ration obtained from ! Messrs Mears and Co., the contractors, by the Relieving Officer, was submitted to the Committee. This is also not equal to the sample. The Committee recommend that all rations be issued in future in the presence of the Believing Officer twice monthly, and have directed a letter to be sent to Messrs Mears and Co., notifying them that, should any article issued not be equal to sample sent with tender, the Com mittee will at once purchase such ration elsewhere at their cost and risk. The Committee have directed the Believing Officer to issue a meat ration to the poor at Christmas.

The Foreman of Works had the honor to bring under the notice of the Council that the Waiotahi road near the Waiotahi battery has been made very narrow, it now being only nine feet wide through the Waiotahi aqueduct taking up a portion of the road. It is imperative that something should be done as it is very dangerous, and may cause a serious accident, there being a sharp angle at that spat. He had the honor also to draw to the Council's attention, that the contract for supplying horses and carting expires on the 16th inst., and to inform them that the work has been done most unsatisfactorily. The cost should only have been 2s per load, but it has cost 4s—twice the estimated' cost. He would recommend that the Council purchase two horses, the Coaucil already having drays and harness. It would be a saving; the feed for two hones will cost £6 per month; repairs

and shoeing, 2; wages for carter, £10; making a total of £18,—being £3 lower than the present cost, and the work that would be done by Council's horses and- . drays would be quite one half more than is done at present.
