AUCKLAND.
■■•■■." This day. A boy named Dobie, aged six, fell from a ladder on which he was playing, and sustained serious injuries, yesterday. Mr Erringtpn', waterworks engineer, estimates the cost of a reservoir on Mount Kden at £9753. The Eeinuera rat. payers yesterday decided against granting of additional publicans' licenses. - The Herald's correspondent telegraphed ;—-There has been a miscoucep-
tion regarding the interview of MrFenton with the King natives, and his negotiations with them, which have been misun derstood as an indirect attempt at renewal of negotiations oo Mr Bryce's part, an idea which, if allowed to go uneorrected, may do harm. The explanation is very simple. The Waikato Confiscated Land Act sets forth the rebellion of natives and confiscation of the land of the rebels. Some subsequently returned to their allegiance, and others were desirous of doing so, and it therefore empowered Government to provide lands for their residence and settlement ouf, of the area still undisposed of. Government were empowered to reserve land togrant it to the natives and to set apart by warrant such grants to be j inalienable, but revokeable failing resi- i dence. The power is not to endure beyond two year?. Mr JFenton while occupied with other duties was unable to complete this work which he had begun, and the Act expired by effluxion of time, but a short Act was passed last session (the Waikato Confiscated Land Act, 1882) to extend the period by two years more. Mr Fenton having retired on his pension is free to proceed with the settlement arrangements to completion. This no doubt will tend indirectly to strengthen Mr Bryce's hands, espicially when the Amnesty Act and other coupled with measures of last session. The Russell natives have imported a printing press, so as to ha»e notices of motion and their parliamentary debates printed.
