Professor Huxley, in distributing the priftes to the successful students at the London School of Medicine for Women recently, said that whether in the future women might take the lead in science or not, yet for his part be had never been able to see why women should not do all they could to make themselves useful members of the community, why they should not take up any branch of science, abd do the best they could in any career ' - open to them. 'He could not understand why there should not be free trade in this matter. For the last few years he had been a member of a Royal Commission on the sub ject,,and be might say that the Commission was extremely impressed with the impor tance of medical education for women. It was also struck with the moderate statement made by Mrs Garrett Anderson, to whom all of them were much indebted, and therefore he might say that whether there was to be one portal or , -many to the entrance to the medical profession, there would be.no barriers against ; women.
