COUNTY COUNCIL.

The annual meeting of the Thames County Council was held at the Council Chambers at noon to-day. Present— Messrs A. Brodie (Chairman), Coutts, Thorburn, Murdoch, Fraser, Deeble, Bull, Porter, and Bagnall.

Cr Tborburn, for the seventh time, proposed Mr Brodie as Chairman. Cr Murdoch had great pleasure in secondiug the proposal. Cr Porter thought the honors should go round. All must agree with him that the chair had been worthily filled. He proposed Cr Bagnall, although he had not consulted him.

Cr Bagnall declined to be a candidate if there was to be a contest. He suggested that the salary be fixed before the election.

Proposed by Col. Fraser, and seconded by Cr Deeble, that the salary be £150 per annum.

Proposed as an amendment by Cr Thorburn, and seconded by Cr Coutts, that the salary be £200. The amendment was negatived.

Cr Porter said his opinion was that they would have to shut up altogether, irrespective of Toting the screw. The bank asked for payment of an overdraft of £7100. -

It was then unanimously resolved that the Chairman's salary be' £150.

Mr Brodie said he would rather not accept the position ; to do so was against his inclination, but the council was in difficulties, and he wished to get it clear of these before leaving office. Mr Brodie paid a high tribute to Or Bagnall, and would be happy to support him were it not for the consideration stated.

Mrßrodie was then unanimously elected chairman for the ensuing year. The consideration of the balance sheet was next proceeded with. Cr Bagnall said that the fact the expenditure for the halt' year was nearly £12,000, and the cost of expending it, £600, called for attention, and showed some change was required. The chairman said his reason for accepting the position was to reduce the overdraft, but if things went on this way it would be £9003 instead of £70C3, and his position would be a pflrroanenej\ The balance sheet was then adopted.
