Lamentable Drowning.

[P«b PfiEss Association.] Auckland, This day. A sad drowning case occurred off Queen-street Wharf on Saturday night. A woman named Letifcia Bryant, while watting for. the arrival of her husband from Hirer head feJJ^oto ' the' water. Captain Tye, of the Alexandria ferry steamer, juipprd after her. The woman af^er struggling in the water for a minute or two sank, and at the same time it was noticed that Tye was apparently in a drowning state. The steamer's t;at had been lowered, and Captain Smith and his mate put off to the assistance of those in the water; The first he reached was Tye who, when caught, was sinking for the last time, and had already sunk some two or three few under water when caught hold of. Ey this time a man named Rose took off bis clothing and jumped into the water from off the wharf, swam to where the womzn wr.s last seen, and not being able to sren anything of her, he dived under water, but was unsuccessful in finding ber. He dived again, and brought the body to the surface. She moved her arms once or twice, and expired. While Rose was in the water his clothing with £5 or £6 in the pockets was stolen. The by* slanders subscribed for a new suit of clothing. It has since transpired that Tye could not swim, and juntped into the water on the impulse of the momeat. Mrs Bryant is the wife of a carpenter, and leaves five children.
