Colonial Prize Firing.
(Pee Peess Association.) '; ' ■■ . Dunedin, Yesterday. ■■ This morning the competition for the Union Steamship Company's Trophy was j decided, Private Sounage, of Waikau, being the winner. The distribution of prices took place this afternoon, the Mayor - of. Dunedin (officiating, when Lieut. Gordon (the Carbine Champion), and Kennedy (the Hifle Champion) received their prizes. There was great enthusiasm displayed. In banding Lieut. Gordon the Belt, the Mayor said that Gordon had proved himself the best carbine shot in New Zealand, not only at this meeting, but at all previous competitions ; and he hoped that he would Jong continue the interest, which he now took in a contest of this kind. On descending from the platform Gordon was cheered vociferously. This is the first.occasion on which Kennedy has won the Belt, and be also received hearty cheering. Gordon takes £67 10s in money prizes, and Kennedy £80 At the review this afternoon 900 Volunteers w;ere present, including the Dnnedin, Invercargill and Oamaru con> panics. The different movements were , well executed, and the march past elicited Spplause from the spectators,- who assembled in large numbers. The weather throughout was fine.
