Colonial Prize Firing.

After lunch yesterday, the Otago and Wellington matches, which count for the Rifle and Carbine Belts respectively, were started, but about 4 o clock they were postponed in consequence of heavy rains, and will not be resumed until Tuesday morning, it having been decided not to interfere with the programme for Monday, which comprises the last rUnge of the Wellington match and the firing of the Oamaru and Union matches. The stopping of the shooting yesterday meets with but little satisfaction from the competitors, who would have preferred to go on. Three matches have been finished, which count in the aggregate for the Rifle and Carbine Championships. The 15 highest for the Rifles are: Brooks (Dunedin), 142, A. Ballinger (Welling, ton), Harding (Oamaru), and Waugh (Dunedin), Coventry (Dunedin), Haslett (Auckland), and Hoskin (Taranaki), 137 each. For the Carbine, the 16 highest aggro gates are—F.France (Wellington). 143; W. Harris (Wellington), 140;" Holmes (Wellington), 134; Perry (Wanganui), 134; Weir (Thames), 133; Ross (Wan- i ganui), 131; Gill (Thames), 129; Kitchen (Wellington), 129 ; Allan (Dunediu), 129 ; Mahoney (Wanganui), 128 ; Ross (Napier) 128; Brownlee (Thames), 127; Gordon j (Thames), 126; Thomas (Thames), 126; Aitken (Wairoa). 125 ; Bodkin (Wairoa), 125. i Two other matches have yet to be fired for each belt. The weather has now I cleared up, and it promisor to be a fine moruing. f . This day. Thia morning the weather is warm and bright. The Union, Marlboro', and Cifilian matches will be fired to-day, also the last range of the Wellington match. Should the weather continue favorable, it is expected the firing will be completed by Wednesday night. A grand review will be held on Thursday, the Invercargill Timaru, and Oamaru volunteers being present. . ■" The following are the highest scorers in the Auckland and Canterbury matches, and fire ten rounds at the 500 yards for the trophy presented by the Union Steamship Co.:—Harding, 93; Soutag, 90; Brooks and Paynter, 89; W. Ferguson, F. France, Gell, Haslett, Home, Sergt. Johnston, A. Mooseman, Wratt, Cor-
poral Webster, and Waugb, 87 each;] J. C. Anderson, Lieut. Grossman, Fos* ter, W. Harris, King, Kennedy, Captain McCargy, and W. McKenzie, 86 each ; Ch'istie, Church, T. Hutehinson, W. Hutchinson, McLatchie, Sutter, Allan, and Sangster, 85 each; Churton. Clark, Cumberbeach, Grant, Hall, Hosking, Kumtner, McGonagle, G. Patterson, Sergt. Ross, Lieut. Sopher, J. Smith, C Stevenson, 84 each ; as only 40 competed, those who scored well have to fire shot for , shot at 200 yards to fill nine vacancies. It is expected this match will be fired on | Wednesday. Those who fired through rain on Saturday have protested against the action of Major Baillie in stopping the firing, which they contend is contrary to regulations. This will be considered to-night, and the Otago match will not be proceeded with I until it has been decided. The Union and Marlborough matches are going on. Splendid weather, with a i light southerly wind. So far the highest aggregates for Carbine Belt are—F. France, Wellington, and W. Harris, Wellington, 173 ; Holmes, Wellington, 168; Weir, Thames, 167; Perry, Wangauui, and Ross, Wanganui, 164.
