y,'". [bt telegbaph.] . .-* (Peb Peeßs Association.) j", . Alexandra, Thursday. '&? . .The, native meeting came oiF to day. : \- > -^jb;'Brjee had given Tawhiao a niemoranisfe\- °^ *Qe Government proposals jesterday to think over before the meeting took place, so that he should have fall time for consideration. .At two o'clock precisely • Mr Bryce came on the ground, and Tawhiae commenced speaking in a me I a phorical manner, hampered, evidently by the knowledge of the Government proposals. So figurative was the speech, and so intended to avoid any definite meaning that Major Te Wbeoro, M.H.E., had to be consulted as to what it implied rather than iaid.—Mr Bryce, in reply, said :— AH he offered most be taken or rejected as a whole. No, opening must arise for any future trouble, an would be the case in a dual authority. The proposals must be accepted or rejected before he left Alexandra. They could not stand over for an indefinite time. If fhey were not accepted he carried them away with him. The sovereignty and all other matters were . included in these proposals. The bulk of
the unsold confiscated land on the western side of the Waipa should be returned to Tawhiao and his tribe; the section of land Tawbiao asked for at Eaipara should be , given to him. He. would raake an appeal to the :Maniapoto chieftains to aid the Waikatos with land as they were co-par-ticipators in (he troubles of the past. GoTernment would build Tawhiao a house where lie pleased, and furnish it for him, and would give him a pension of £4,00 a year for life. If these proposals were accepted as to defining his status and authority bj the Government, Tawbiao should be appointed an Assessor under the Besident Magistrates Act,— an office cot before . „ ..given but to Europeans only. He should be ■ made an Assessor of theNaliveLands Court, ■■";■■;'* Judtice of the Peace for the colony, and 1 GoVernment would advise the Governor
,to call him to the Legislature Council. Tawhiao then asked for delay, so that the chiefs ecnld consider the proposals, and, after some conversation, Saturday wes fixed for a reply (o be given. Mr Brjce does not know for certain the exact amount cf unsold land across the Waipa, but considers it about 20,C09 ecres, and that at least 3CO Waikatos hare to be provided for. Tawhiao, after the meeting had broken up, came into Alexandra in Mr Bryce'B trap.
