This day
There was a narrow escape from a serious fire about 9 last night. The upstairs bedroom of the Prince of Wales Hotel was found on fire r The flames burst through the roof and wall, and it seemed at first impossible to save the hotel or adjoining premises. The night being very calm, the fire was, however, kept under by the force pump and hose dn the premises, until the engines of the brigade got- to ivbrk, when the fire was extinguished without extending beyond the upper storey of the hotel. Damage done by fire and water is estimated at £1000, and is covered by insurance. It> origin is mysterious. It broke out in the bedroom of a lodger named Mac Donald, who had not been in the room for hours. It began at the head of the bed. Insur~ ances on hotel in New Zealand, Liverpool and London, Globe, National and others, £2000; furniture and stock, Colonial and Victoria, £1500.
