Thames Harbor Board.
! The monthly meeting of the Harbor i Board was held yesterday afternoon. I , Present—Col. Fraser (Chairman), Messrs Osborne, McGowan, Marshall, Wilson, Carpenter, and Head. The minutes of previous meeting were . read and confirmed. i MINING SPECULATION. Mr Frederick White applied for a piece of ground on the foreshore, now marked with pegs W, to be used for rainins purposes and erection of engine- bouse,* I shaft, &c. He would require .to have i access and egress to and from the ground, and would be willing to pay the Board at. I the same rate per man's ground as if included in the goidfield. Mr Dean indicated the ground marked out upon the plan of the foreshore, its extent being from 60 to 70 men's ground. The Chairman suggested that the offer be accepted, but that the Board also im pose a condition that they receive a percentage of royalty upon the gross proceeds of gold resulting from mining operations. Mr McGowan said they might turn this to advantage in filling up inside the silt works; by making it conditional that the applicants deposit all mullock according to the\Harbor Master's directions. It was determined to grant the right for 21 years, similarly to claims, subject to the conditions mentioned above. SHOBTLAND WHAHF. " "The Secretary ot the Thames River Steam' Navigation Company wrote drawing attention to the inadequate accommo* dation provided for vessels trading to and from Shortland Wharf, and urged its immediate extension ; he also showed the necessity for erecting an additional shed for the storage of bulky goods such as hay, chaff, kerosene, &c. •■ -\ Mr Carpenter moved that the Harbormaster be instructed to bring up a report upon the-extension of Shortland Wharf at next meeting of the Board, with estimate of cost—Seconded by Mr JRead and carried. ' ' ' ' KOPU WHARF. A letter was received from the head of the Telegraph Department, stating that the Public Works Department had been instructed to repair the damage occasioned to Kopu Wharf by the deposit thereon of telegraph poles. DBEDGE PUNTS. Mr Errington forwarded plans and specifications of the punts required to work with the dredge, and suggested that tenders be called for their construction.—. On the motion of Mr Carpenter it was decided to call for tenders immediately, returnable within; 14 days. ■i ■::'' ■■ i f ,;.!.,-, GBAHAMSTOWN WHAftF. I The Secretary reminded the Board, that at last meeting they haddeferred the'eonsideration of Mr Errington's recommendations re Grabamstown Wharf until HOW. . Mr Carpenter endorsed this opinion. The matter was eventually postponed indefinitely. . - . GOODS SHED. : Mr McGowan remarked on the inadequacy of the Goods Shed at: Burke-street-Wharf for the trade.. He bad frequently known goods to be damaged by being left on the wharf through insufficiency of siorageaccommodation. '.' • CUBTIs'B WHABF LIGHT. Mr Carpenter asked that the.Harbor Master's attention be drawn to the" inefficient state of the green light at the end of Curtis's Wharf.—The Secretary under* took to speak to the Harbour Master about this matter; > ; r ' ■/■'■ i
