Mr Max _ Wittifaj^a young German connected with the^tgreat Hamburgh shipping firm of Slbmdns and Co., who come . . here from 'Germany for" the purpose of reporting oit,the capabilities of the Waikato land for.the production of sugar, died of congestion of the lungs on Sunday.' He had spoken favorably of the land and was about to^ proceed home for the purpose of forming! a scheme for the introduction of German labor and capital* and for the erection of the best machinery» A lad named Milter^ aged 16, whose father keeps a store on Grafton Roadj went down a gully between that road and the Domain to search for ferns. He was accompanied by a companion 'younger than himself. JVEiller climbed to the top of the fence to get dyer to where the ferns were growing. On top of fhe.fence. were fixed iron spikes, and when Miller wa£ : balancing himself, on top to jump clear, he slipped dowbi and! one of "the spikes caught in .his ; thigh, and so be was kept hanging ou the fence. The boy who was with him was not strong enough to disengage him, and ran for his father. When he arrived he fonnd his son by struggling had disengaged himself from.the spike, and had fallen <to the ground, where he was lying in a pool of blood. He was immediately conveyed to the hospital, quite in a delirious condition. Small hopes are entertained of his recovery. RewiManiapoto approves of the proposed English Land Company, and the Auckland Native Lands Colonisation Company, but thinks they, should unite, in which case he would become a director.
A number of Te Whiti's followers are living at Whatiwhatihoe, and are prophesying .after, the manner of Te^ Whiti. It is thought probable that the movement will increase. v
