The railway proposals are assuming definite shape, and acquiring a more healthy aspect. At the meeting last night it was decided form a company. Some misunderstanding seemed to prevail relative to the preferential shares. There are certain preliminary expenses which must be defrayed by someone, snch as advertising, printing, lawyers' fees, &c. It was.thought that £150 would be sufficient for the purpose, and it was decided to issue these shares. The persons who take them stake their money on the die. If the company be floated they get £1 worth of shares for 10s—if it falls through they lose the whole. The directors suggested that under these circumstances the shares .should be distributed as much as possible over the community, and those in the room heartily responded, and took up one half amongst them. We hope to see others come forward and put their shoulder to the wheel. As each person who takes preferential shares will be placed upon the provisional directory, those who pay the paper will have the advantage of choosing the tone. We have always insisted that the backbone of the undertaking will be the amount of land available, and it is therefore exceedingly satisfactory to find Mr Sheehan insisting in the most positive manner that Government have pledged themselves to give the necessary land, if it cannot be obtained on the route, somewhere else. We were disappointed at seeing such a beggarly attendance last night to discuss this subject, which is the foremost in importance to the district, and hop* that there will now be no drag to the chariot wheels, but that all who can at all gee their way to doing so will take up shares. Of course should the company not be floated, the deposits on the con* : tributing shares will be returned. Up to the present applications have been re* oeived for 9000 contributing and 145 preferential shares.
