Wanganui Races.

Wanganui, Yesterday. At the Wanganui Spring Meeting to day the weather is fine and attendance large. All the horses who accepted for the first two races ran. The bookmakers have fared well in the first two races as the favorites have failed to win. For first race seven started, Dauphin being the favorite, about equally with Portrait. Mr Powell's Last Chance won a good race, beating Dauphin, who was leading throughout the race until entering the straight. There was £140 on the totalisator, with £15 on the winner, giving a division of £8 Bs, and on the inside of the totalisator machine £187, giving £7 13s as division. Maiden Plate, 50 soys, 1| miles. — Powell's Last Chance, 1 ; Povrdrell's Daphne, 2; J. Higgie's Portrait, 3. Time, 2mins. ssecs.
Handicap Httbdles, 2 miles and a distance; P. J. Connolly's Ngatata, 9st 131bs 1";-G-. Wilson's New Year, 12st, 2; Enderby's Mount, 3. Time, 4mins. 34§secs. Parnell, Diatus, and Fungus LfelL red—till—-n«aring—the,, last |Euraie~wlieh Ngatata drew away with ease. New Year struggled gamely to get on terms with him but was stopped by the weight. Totalisator outside, £198, £33 on winner, dividend £5 7s ; inside, £267, £45 on winner, dividend £5 7s.
The Wanganui Stakes Handicap, two miles, 150sovs :—Mr J. D. Powdrell's roan horse Tallyho, S years, by PapapaDiscretion, Bst (F. Mountain), 1; Mr J. Hancock's blk filly, Fishwoman, 3 years, by Yattondon-Fanny Fisher, 6st 121bs (George Lang), 2; Mr It. Higgie's bay filly Gem, 3 years, by Painter»Fides, 6st lOlbs (Carey), 3. Hinemoa, Bst lib; Larry, Bst 2lbs; Sincerity, Bst lib; Scotch Mist, 7st4'bs; Camellia, 7st3lba; Blue Gown, 7st 2lbs ; St. Clair, 6st lllbs, and Minerva, 6st 71bs, also started. At a quarter of a mile from home Tallyho held a good lead, and was pulling double, and won easily by two lengths. Fishwoman beat Gem by abouta like distance. Sincerity was fourth; the others tailing off. Time 3mins -l9seci.
Kailway Plate, weight for age, 50sovs, one mile and a half .—Mr J. H. Pollock's bk mare Hippodamia, Bst lllbs (Geo. Laing), 1; Mr D. Scott's eh m Camellia, 9st 21bs, 2. No others started. The betting was 10 to 1 on Hippodamia, who won in a canter.
Consolation Handicap, of 30sors., 1 mile and a distance:—Mir B. F, Harmon's Minerva by Day Dawn, 6st 31b8,1; Mr
Whalley's Scotch Mist, 6st 13)bs,:3J; Mr .Morse's Sincerity, Bst, 3. $SvMr Bowen's St. ' Clair, 7st, also started. Scotch Mist was made a hot favourite, but Minerva, and outsider, jumped away with the lead, and won all the way by two lengths. Time, 2mins osecs.
