THE "SOCIETY " ABOMINATION.
I (To the Editor of the Evening Star.) Sib, —Iv the last issue of the Auckland Observer I noticed a critique in the "Thames Tittle Tattle" oh the recent performance of the Toole Club: some of the members are mentioned by name, and very roughly handled. Now, Sir, I consider that if ladies and gentlemen give their willing assistance in amateur entertainments for benevolent objects it is not only bad taste, but positively insulting, for newspaper correspondents to hold up their failures to public ridicule, if-ama-teurs fall short of expectations, they should be gently dealt with, and not sub* jected to the same sharp criticisms which are looked for by professionals. The writer of the "Tittle Tattle " referred to, I believe to be some person in our midst who has either the entreeto the society of those he criticises, or the informmcion is supplied to him by some wretched "sneak," who, if detected, would be avoided by everyone. Whichever it may be, the untruthfulness of such remarks, if continued, will only lead to a refusal from amateurs to give their services in aid of. any benevolent entertainment.—l ami &c, N.E.P.
