AUCKLAND.
j Tim day. A Gale—Two Men Drowned. At 10 o'clock this morning, a boat con | taining Mr Liing, chief officer of the British ship Aahmore, and Hobins, Veigler, and Connor, seamen, left the Queen street wharf with the intention of going on board that vessel which was lying in the stream. A strong westerly gale was blowing, and before the boat had gone 300 yards from the wharf she capsized, and Robins aod Veigler were drowned. Laing and Connor supported themselves on an oar and were rescued by the ferry steamer Alexandra. When the steamer came on the scene Robins was obserred swimming, but he sank before he was readied. The following hare been chosen to compose the cricket team for the southern tour: —Messrs Barton, Blair, Browning, Buckland, P. Dufaur, Gill, Lankham, Mumford, O'Brien, Eobinson, Teatro, Wood, R. Wynyard, and Yates. The American astronomers hare selected a site hero for the obserr.atory for the transit of Venus.
