Sir Auckland Colvin, who formerly occupied the position of British ControllerGeneral of Egyptian Finance, is now returning to Egypt. He has, it has transpired, been instructed to suspend the resumption of his former duties of control, and it is expected that these will now be permanently abolished.
London, October 5. Honors to the Victors. The Corporation of the city of London Beaucbamp Seymour on the success of the British military and naval operations in Egypt. Mr Dillon, M.P. Mr Dillon, M.P. for Tipperary, has consented to reconsider the question of his intended retirement from political life. Indian Police for Egypt An Indian police force is being organised in Alexandria. An Arab force has made a raid on Tunis, A Plot amongst Convicts. A plot has been discovered amongst the convicts of Dartmoor for managing a general escape, by means of keys ingeniously made out of bones. It was only discovered just in time to be frustrated. The Holy CarpetThe Holy Carpet is to be removed from Cairo to Mecca, and the troops at Cairo have been ordered to salute on the occasion. Arabi Pashait is found very difficult to prove the complicity of Arabi in the massacres aDd outrages at Alexandria.
The Times states that Arabi has demanded to be tried by a tribunal composed entirely of Englishman. Industrial Discontent. Great discontent prevails among the factory hands in the English provinces, and the matter has become so serious that wholesale arrests hare been made, and the prisons are full. In several places explosive bombs were found ready for use. Russia Advises Reform Elsewhere. Russia is pressing strongly for reforms in Armenia. Alexandria, October 5. Mecca Pilgrims. The customary ceremony connected with the departure of an extensive caravan of pilgrims for Mecca took place to-day at Cairo. A large body of the British troops paraded for the occasion, and Sir Garnet Wolseley, the Duke of Connaught, and other officers were present.
