PINAFOBE. The manager telegraphed yestefdw f—"Picked up new.leader in iatermsuit#'£ level showing good colours of- goN^aiKr v striking towards big. reef." Cri»<hiog it , proceeding at the Herald mill with 10 head. ' • • " SOUTHERN X3ROSS. The winze on No. 2 reef at No. 3 level of the Prince Imperial shaft, is now down between 36 and 40 feet, and the country has lately shown a, considerably improve- y ment. Ttie leader . has- been split up for the last 10 feet, the largest vein being about fire inches in thickness^ and lying on the footwall. The. other veins are i from half an inch, to .an inch in thickness, andiarry nice mineral. * Another small vein about an inch in thickness in the , eastward 'end of the winze, and halt that size westward came in from thp. Banging* wall Bide a .day or iwo ago, .and in break* , ing this down yesterday. 61bs of nice picked stone were obtained. .Gold was showing in the leader this morning, so a y few more pounds of stone will probably be obtained next breaking down. All these veins are coming together, and from appearances will junction and form a solid reef a few feet lower down. The manager has yet fully 50 feet to sink before reaching the No. 4 level; so there is ample room for a good block of ground to exist here. ' Both this' reef and the Mariner's ' are standing right up to the surface in the Cross ground, so if anything important is discovered it will be a good thing both for this company and the Dfe\> Level Tribute. QUEEN OF,BEAtTTY.,,. T > At No. 9 level the drive first put in be* yond the cross-lode has been stopped. The face was in about 20ft,, and had ju«fc - • »*t ' wilb the MlML^ftialqpfe-W^--appeared, to <be the formation^ of a lode was discovered on the left' hand or ,north* - ward side, but the manager did not open out upon it. He has since. p#t in" a drive where the hangiogwall of the reef .would . have been if it had continued, on a body of quartz with a defined wall. This produces about a foot or 18 inches of cr6sh> ing dirt, but the solid quartz is not more than six inches thick. . This may turnout ■■-, to be the main reef, and if so will pro^ "-• bably increase in size as.driven upon. It carries good mimeral. Hayes and party,, contractors for driving on the Queen of the May reef at <his level, will make .a. start on Monday. Hart and party, whose contract is for driving on main reef seaward,. are at present advancing a dig on the foot* wall of the reef. They arein good country and one of the veins on the footwall of .the ' reef is looking well, carrying nice mineral. The stopes are now opened up for fully a ■ hundred feet in length, and a leading one is coming back towards the shaft. In this the reef is about .4 feet thick, and does not show much gold, but as.thestope3 rise towards the r winze a great improvement takes place both in the size and ' quality of the reef. At the winze and just beyond it is fully 15ft thick, the whole of which is shot down and sent to the mill. In the extreme eastern end the stopes are abutting on the cross-lode. Here the Queen of the May lode is also being taken down. Gold is seen freely all over the greater part of the stopes, but no time is spent in picking over the.quartz, as the battery saves the gold. As the stopes gradually rise from No.' 9 level passes are constructed for the passage of the quartz. A substantial log pass is. being placed in the eastern end, three feet of which is used for the quartz, and the other portion as a ladderway. This pass would be useful if it was desirable at any time to send mullock down from No. Bto No. 9, ; as it probably will be when No. 10 is opened up and stoping started. At No. 8 I driving has been started southward on | the crosslode, towards the Bird-in-Hand shaft. The men have bean down this I shaft lately, and find they are able to get , from if to the^Piako No. 6Jevel. At No/ ' 7 level JEaster and party hare started to drive westward on the main reef. A windlass has been rigged over the Piako shaft, and after some preliminary arrange*, ments are completed the• men will start ; to take out the old pump lifts. THAMES DEEP LEVEL TRIBUTE.
A report from the mine manager lately says:—The reef in the drive at the 500 feet level has been small and pinched, up, since my last; but yesterday ; the reef came up against a slide, which is about six feet, in thickness, and ia the other side of the slide we have got what appears to be the reef, as there is some good looking quartz in it, and a good deal of water running out of it. I will not be able to do much with the face of the drive for two days, as the timbering is some distance behind, and the ground will require to be secured before going any further.—James Coutxs. MOANATAIRL The company cleaned up this morning and retorted. Thereturu, after melting, weighed otfozs Bdwts gold, making total yield for month 2lOozs 2dwts. Amount crushed for laat parcel was 20 tons general dirt and 75lbs picked stone ; total amount crushed, 170 tons. Guthrie and party have crushed:6 lqids for the good return of 250z3 3dwt«'gold. Green and party have banked a farther parcel of 4ozs 4dwt« gold. GOLD RETURNS. Coiiian.—Jury and party, tributera, have crushed 14 loads for the return of 1702S odwts gold.
