About two thousand persons were present on the course. The betting fraternity was fairly represented, and there were two totalisators, which latter did not appear to work very smoothly at first. The first event, the Hawke's Bay Guineas, brought but a field of seven horses, Kingask, Eangipo, and Teata being the favorites.
