Supplying County Water.
There has been some correspondence passing between Mr W. 8. Greenville and the County authorities recently relative to supplying County Water to him. On June 12th, the County Clerk wrote to Mr Greenville :—" In conformity with the 3rd of the enclospd regulations the Council will supply you with water for your battery, but disclaim any liability whatever in connexion with injury to a tail race." The third regulation referred to in the County Clerk's letter reads :— "' Water in the Karaka and Hape creeks shall be charged for at the rate of £2 5s per sluice head per week to machine owners." We understand a letter was sent to the County Chairman, dated Sept. 15th, to the following effect:—" Sir,—On Saturday, 9th of this month, I gave Mr Aitken notice that I required the water for my battery; it was granted. On Wednesday, I 13th, I started work at 8.45 a.m., and the water was stopped at 4 p.m., and this water given to Mr G. W. Bull, who has been crushing since yesterday morning. On receipt of your letter of June 12th, 1882, I went to considerable expense so as to use the water in accordance with the terms contained in that letter, and I am put to considerable inconvenience and loss by the direct breach of agreement on your part. I, therefore, respectfully request you to inform me when I am to have the water in accordance with clause 3 of the Regulations; and further, are you, on behalf of your Council, preparedjto meet the loss sustained by me by the direct breach of agreement on your part. An early answer will oblige." To that communication a reply, dated 18th inst., was recoived from the County Clerk, stating:—At a meeting of the
Water Eace Committee the following resolution was passed : ' That Mr Greenville be informed his letter of the loth inst. has been considered by the Water Eace Com mittee, and they find that after provision is made for supplying the machines specified in No. 1 ot the Regulations, there is not at present sufficient water available for his battery, and of this fact Mr Greenville was made acquainted by the surveyor al the time of making his verbal application. When there is sufficient it will be suppliedto Mr Greenvile upon his making application for it in terms of the Emulations.' Eegulation No. 1, mentioned in the County Clerk's memo., reads:—"The owners of all machines usintr water continuously shall be charged at the rate of £3. per sluice head per week, and take precedence of all other machines except the Queen of Beauty pump duriog the continuance of the present arrangement with the company.
