CALEDONIAN.

The manager has cleared out for a distance of 20 feet the drive put in northward from the cross-cut at No. 2 level by Capt. Richards, and which Mr Hicks thought must pass through the leaders now being worked so successfully from the prospect ing winze. He finds the ground is all solid above ■ the drive, and the leaders are showing in the roof, carrying nice pold. The extent of the block on these leaders above Wo. 2 cannot yet be ascertained, but whatever there is is pretty sure to be well worth taking out. The rise on JS"o. 1 reef in the Otago section Has holed through, and the men are now cleaning out the old drive broken into from the drive at the top of Capt. Richards' rise'this week. This will take about a week to complete, during which time very little if any quartz will be broken. SMILE OF FORTUNE (OWHAROA). The battery has lately been running with 15. head 12 hours per day on company's dirt, except for three days last week when five head were employed on a parcel from the Battalion. The southern stopes on No. 2 reef continue to produce very fair crushing dirt. In some places the manager is taking it out 7 or 8 feet wide. The crosscut at the intermediate level towards the Radical claim is in over SOft., and is in a good class of country, more easy to work than it was a week or two ago.' A small leader was cut on Thursday, which givos a good prospect, and will be worth driving on at some future time. The drive on Farmer %nd Sims' leader has been advanced ten feet, and has holed through into their workings. The leader is very similar in appearance to what it is with the tributers, and gives a very fair prospect "when panned off. As the last parcel from the tribute party referred to gave fully 3ozs per ton, some good crushing dirt will probably be coming to* hand shortly. ■.•The battery is in good working order, and although the river is low there is plenty of power yet.
