OUR MINES.
QUEEN OP BEAtTTY.' * The following telegram was forwarded to the directors to day :•—" Obtained this morning 1051bs specimens and 4Olbs picked stone.— Gkobge Black." This haul, add also the one of 2ewt on Satorday, were - broken from beyond the junction of the Queen of the May reef, showing that the shot of gold does not by any means die out { at the junction. NEW PKINCE IMPERIAL. The last of the works on the surface— the erection of the hoppers—was: com* pletsd today, and Mr Clark, under whose supervision the work has been done, is to be. congratulated on his success as a. carpenter es well as a mine manager. la addition to the alterations set out in the specifications he has pat en additional tea feet in height upon-the engine, hoace, which gires more rom. The poppet legs stand rery firmly, and the engine works, more emcDthly and at less pressure- than-.'-, before the second cage was put on. ' It will be remembered that only two tenders ' were received—one at £135, and the other about £290. Mr Clarke recommended ' the directors not to accept either- as he considered he could do the work consider* ably cheaper. The exact cost is 4>ot~ yetto hand, but we beliere it will be a little more than half the amount of the lowest tender. The manager reports:—" Drive _ seaward from No. 4 level is now in- 30ft,"*" leaving 38 feet still to go before connecting with winze. The leader here is not quite so large, but is more compact and shows gold more freely, although not producing much picked dirt. Drive hillwards is in 14ft. The lead in this end is maintaining its size, being fully 3ft (hick '] of solid quartz, showing gold at each breaking down. I have carried both, drives in from the shaft for a distance of 10ft the full height of the chamber (viz., 10ft.) It will not be necessary to timber ■• the chambers at present, as the ground is splendid standing ground, and may not _ require timbering until the shaft is wanted to ba sunk deeper. I expect to connect seaward drive with No. 1 winze in 10 days from now, and will then be in a position to break out enough quartz to keep the battery going. I intend to start crashing - at the Alburnia battery on Thursday next. Tributers: Scanlan and-party are,>alao, ; going to orush about 25 loads of dirt at the same battery.— G. S. Cube." MOANATAIKI, The manager report 3 for la<weekasfollows: —" Sedan section, SOfc "level JL No. 9 footwall leader on which we ere driving is 18 inches in thickness. A little gold only is visible in thestone, but.the stuff is payable. The same lead is being stoped fro# below 80ft level... It, will average 15 niches in width, and is of.a very promising character, occasionally showing void. No. 9 hangingwall lead hak tidt been quite so "productirrYor sotM^Tays pasi, but the indications are favorable for an improvement. All Nations leader, 80ft level looks very promising. - A little gold, is seen almost every breaking. Tunnel level, No. 2 N.W. crosscut: We have . struck a leader, (probably the footwall portion of No. 2 reef) in face of drive. Some of the quartz has a likely appear* ance for gold. The leader interseoted last week will junction with it in it? course to the main slide. The slide is only a ihort' distance from our crosscut at' this point.' The triai parcel from' the above lead, which I referred to in my last; yielded about Bdwts per ton; that is payable. A small trial lot of 3| tons from drive underneath main slide showed only a tracing of gold. Nonpareil section: The timbering of crosscut was completed last' Wednesday. According to Mrßayldon's survey (which he made on Thursday last) the Nonpareil shaft is only' about sft. ahead of the crosscut. All our other workings are without change to notei— J. G. Vivian." BATTALION (OWHAROA.) The manager has received intimation that the quartz is looking up for a considerable improvement, and that, they, intend to start crushing this week. GOLD BETUBNB. Albuknia.—McLean and party have crushed 8 loads of general dirt for the good, yield of 21ozs 6dwts gold. ' ; Hapb Cbek.—Stewart and party's crushing of 4 loads has given 4ozs 12dwis gold.
