QUEEN OF BEAUTY.
The centre of attraction in this mine at present is undoubtedly the bottom or No. 9 level, eastward of the shaft, put in on the main reef. This is now in about 120 feet, or about 20 - feet past the winze from No. 8 level. Some weeks ago a leading stope was started, and this has been carried up to the winze, but is now stopped for a shift or two till the drive is timbered up, when work can be prosecuted with greater facility. The drive put in was of the ordinary size, and was therefore in the heart of the reef, which is fully 15ft from wall to wall. At the present time this drive is being pushed on, but men are engaged some distance back from the face taking out the portions of the reef left standing. This has now been done up to the winze, so stoping will soon be in progress. The .reef is of a similar nature to what is was in the winze, with the exception that the veins are much stronger and the gold richer. All these veins show gold, though the richest one at present is one on the footwall of the drive. A splendid show of the precious,, metal was visible in this at the time of ray visit this morning the band of gold being over an inch in width in. places. The junction of the Queen of the May reef has not yet been met with. A tremendous body of water is now issuing from the face, which makes it difficult to save all the picked stone, and no doubt a goodly'amount goes away with the general dirt. The minerals accompanying the gold in the veins are of a splendid character for gold, consisting of ruby silver and silvery mundic. The discovery of such rich stone at this level augurs well for the prospects of the next level. The increase in the quality of the stone from No. 8 to No. 9 level is more than in any other level, and if it goes ou improving at the same rate, No. 10 level should prove an exceedingly rich, one. At the battery, crushing on quartz from No, 7 level was utoppecl to»day, and the
20 head are now running on dirt from No. 9 level, which is showing up very well on the plates. GOLD EETUENS, Moanataibi.—Saiseh and party have banked Bozs lldwts gold. Kxtbanui Hiti,.—-James and party have crashed about sO2bs of specimens for the fine yield of 67ozs 15dwts melted gold. City of Manchester.— A crushing for Scott and party has yielded 6ozs lSdwts melted gold.
