THE THAMES PETITIONS.
[By Telegbaph]. (fbom our own correspondent,) Wellington, This day. The petition of the Thames Borough Council was before the Goldfields Committe this morning, when the discussion on £BCCO back dues was again taken up. Brown (Chairman), Rolleston, Weston, Cadman, Norris, and Seddon were present.
Beetham appeared in charge of the peiition. Wakefield, Under-Secretary of Golds fields came to be examined, and admitted all the allegations contained in the petition were correct, but could not of course say whether the petitioners were technically right or not.
Eolleston said the Government were quite willing to have the case tested in a Court of Law, and proposed that a recommendation to the Government to that effect be made,
Weston proposed the petition should be recommended to Government to deal with the question of law raised, when Sheehan said there was no use his staying longer, as the petition might as well be thrown into the waste paper basket as to be referred to the Government. The Thames ought to be put in the same position as other goldfields. Wason asked Sheehan to remain, and said the Thames ought to be placed in the same position as Southern goldfields, when Seddon proposed that as the allegations in the petition were substantially correct apart from the question of law, the Houbo should be recommended to provide means for the back revenue, and give to the local bodies a sum equal to that they had been deprived of.
ilolieston opposed the motion, but after some discussion the motion was carried.
