This day,
Mark Martin, employed on the railway, died in the hospital on Saturday night from injuries received that afternoon. The deceased, while running alongside some tracks which were being shunted, tripped and fell between the (ruck wheels, mangling his left thigh and breaking his right arm in two places.
Em Whatanui, who escaped from the Wairoa lockup a fortnight ago, and for whose capture the K.M. offered a reward of £5, was brought,into town on Saturday by some Maoris in a buggy. The prisoner's arms were bound with flax, and feet with the trace chain. The prisoner had called at a natire pah for food, and being recognised, was at oncelseized and conveyed hither in the manner described.
An extraordinary rain storm commenced on Saturday afternoon lasting all Sunday from Saturday morning till this morning. The rainfall amountjd to four and a half inches. The rainfall this month to date was seven inches. The rivers are all hifch, but not overflowing. The lower parts of the town were flooded by the storm water.
